aboutus

Mantra is JBHS's long-standing literary magazine. We're striving to publish the works of Burroughs students while promoting creativity across all mediums. Mantra is the place for art of all kinds.

Editor-In-Chief

Editor-In-Chief

Sophia Moore

A current senior at JBHS, Sophia Moore is the Editor-in-Chief and the (self-proclaimed) one responsible for the revival of Mantra Magazine from the dead. She was drawn to the idea of starting a literary magazine at Burroughs because she believes everyone deserves the chance to be creative and express their artistic talents however possible. When she’s not working on Mantra (and even when she is), Sophia can be found sending emails for JSA, working on the Yearbook, or writing for one of several other magazines. The one thing she’ll always be doing is listening to music.

Hi I’m Marty Coha and I’m the social media manager for Mantra Magazine. I really wanted to be a part of Mantra because I wanted to help other students feel free to express themselves creatively. Somethings to know about me is that I love astrology and traveling (I’m a total Sagittarius). If you ever have questions about the magazine feel free to DM our Instagram.

Victoria is a sophomore enrolled at Burroughs and is considering a career in the editorial field. On the Mantra Magazine Team, she works as a Fiction Editor. She is currently working on a Middle-Grade novel. Its plot resembles her desk, she says. Incredibly messy. She loves to create, wear pantsuits, and read novels! You can find her at victoriaannekrol.com

Elizabeth Dagestino

Hello all! My name is Elizabeth, and I’m a senior this year at JBHS. I joined the JBHS Yearbook

staff as a writer during my sophomore year, and earned my current position as Coverage Editor. I

joined Mantra Magazine because writing is one of my absolute favorite things to do, and I hope

to become a best-selling author in the future. When I’m not coming up with ideas for novels that I plan to write, I can probably be found listening to Broadway musicals, watching Criminal

Isabella Rosoff

Hi, my name is Isabella Rosoff, I am sixteen, and I will be a Junior in the fall. I am very excited to be a Fiction Editor for Mantra Magazine. I have always loved reading and writing ever since I was little, so I am very grateful to have this opportunity to share my passion with others. I joined Mantra Magazine because I thought it would be a great learning experience for myself and the other students involved. I can’t wait to start!

Lyric Pastora

Hi my name is Lyric Pastora! I joined Mantra Magazine to express my passion for the arts. I’m really excited to look at what everyone turns in, or maybe even create my own work to turn in. Some of my hobbies include watching movies, listening to music, playing guitar, and writing my own stories. I’m interested in hopefully one day making films and creating stories to share with the world :)

Jeffry Stein

Hi, I'm Jeffry Stein. I am a John Burroughs High School Senior involved with drama, teen court, and of course, Mantra. I am fascinated by politics, literature, philosophy, psychology, history, drama, and many other topics. Of course, this led me to be introduced to Mantra, which has been a joy to work with, even if the pandemic has caused some madness for us. Overall, I am looking forward to the year, and I am looking forward to Mantra.

Joshua Martinez

I’m Joshua Martinez. I became Mantra’s Review + Opinion Editor because I enjoy reading people’s thoughts on basically anything - their favorite book, thoughts on current events, and everything in between. If you ever want to express an idea or view for others to read, as the R + O Editor, I’ll help your work make it in Mantra.

Art Directors

Art Directors

Natterra Bennett

Hi! My name is Natterra Bennett and I am a junior at John Burroughs. A bit more about me, art has always been a huge part of my life. I’ve been drawing ever since I was little and currently I am learning animation. I’ll be working as an art director, meaning that I’ll be selecting the pieces to be featured in the magazine. I joined Mantra Magazine because I want to see the creatives of Burroughs share their work and get the recognition they deserve. Hopefully, I’ll see some of your art soon!

Evelyn Bresee

Hi, my name is Evelyn Bresee, a new Art Director! I drum and play a little bit of bass, and of course, I love doing art, whether it be digital, on a paper, or canvas. I joined because my friends suggested joining Mantra to me, and also because I love being involved with art and seeing what others can create!

Digital Media Editors

Digital Media Editors

Charlotte Hopkins

Hey everybody! My name is Charlotte and I’m one of the Digital Media Editors for the Mantra Magazine. I joined this magazine because I think there needs to be more representation of all types of art at Burroughs. Although I’m proud to say we do have a variety of art classes at Burroughs, I don’t think that’s enough. There are so many different mediums and categories of art that are not taught at our school. Additionally, I know there are so many artists at Burroughs that may not feel comfortable or may not have room in their schedules for an art class. These artists matter too!!! Especially with everything going on, it’s crucial that we let Burroughs students show their creativity through all types of platforms, including a magazine. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy the magazine and the bright future we have ahead of us for this publication!!!!🧡

Ash Villatoro

Hello! I am Ash, a 16 year old senior and the oldest of four. My largest website project so far would have to be for the Mantra Magazine website for my school. Along with my knowledge in basic web design, I am very passionate about my art, imagination, and making the best out of a tough time. My goal for the future is to become a well-known artist known for their work in Character Design and in my original comics. As Walt Disney puts it, “Laughter is timeless. Imagination has no age. And dreams are forever.”
